Editorial:

A report in The Times this morning once more discusses the pros and cons of face coverings. A German and Danish led study has just been published. On 6th April, the Germany town of Jena passed a local law making face masks mandatory in shops and on public transport. The same happened in Saxony on 20th April. In the next few days, the whole of the country followed suit.

Scientists have now been able to study the data emerging from each of the German regions both before and after masks were made mandatory. This is the closest thing to a controlled trial in public that can be achieved. The results were clear. In each case, making masks mandatory caused a 25%-40% reduction in transmission rates. And the earlier they were introduced, the bigger the impact.

We have been advocating the mandatory use of face masks or face coverings for several weeks. Slowly the Government is catching up, but we all need to act for them to become culturally acceptable. I am currently experimenting with a clear visor, with the goal of preventing my glasses steaming up, whilst at the same time preventing me from projecting droplets towards anyone else.

In another report, the Government is at last considering the routine and regular testing of all public facing workers. I hope it won't be long before the virus passport we have talked about is implemented.

Visors may be a practical alternative to a mask. Let's hope we see some analysis of this soon.
