Daily Newsletter Wednesday 10th June 2020
Editorial:
Ashok Sharma led the Government briefing and I was delighted to see that they have given some clarity over what can and cannot open on Monday 15th June. All shops can re-open if they can demonstrate that they are Covid Secure. Risk assessment templates have been issued and a notice of compliance must be posted in the window of all premises. Local councils and the Health and Safety Executive will be able to use their enforcment powers to close shops that are not complying.
Back in May I suggested something similar, but more rigorous, with a Covid-19 "scores on the doors" rating for each establishment on a 1-5 scale for biosecurity. Under this scheme, all businesses would have been free to open. This would have avoided the arbitary rules that allowed Aldi to sell plants but not garden centres.
Late last week the Johnstones' Decorating Centre in Kettering re-opened. We had been searching for specific paint for the Village Hall for the last few weeks, as our stocks were running low. The layout at the store was excellent with some of the best biosecurity measures I have seen. According to the manager, this could have been implemented weeks ago, but they were forbidden to open. The demand was certainly there from both professionals and retail customers. What a wasted opportunity!
Nationally:
| 286 deaths were reported by the Government yesterday taking us to 40,883 across the UK. The numbers of new daily infections increased to 1,387. This is a reflection of poor reporting over the weekend. |
