Daily Newsletter Monday 8th June 2020
Editorial:
Globally the number of Covid-19 cases has hit nearly 7 million, and there have been over 400,000 deaths. Cases are still rising in South America and India. Iran is facing a second wave. Some countries still have the worse to come.
Daily deaths in the UK fell below 100 and those in the USA below 700. New York City has decided to reopen for business from today, in spite of the ongoing risks. "Put the economy first" is now the new message over the pond, because they see themselves on the downward slope of their epidemic.
In the UK, we are still getting mixed messages from the Government, SAGE and Public Health England. Many of these messages are being rushed out with little planning. Sunday's announcement that Churches would be reopening for private prayer from Monday 15th June, was a complete surprise, even for the Churches. Today in the Times, there is a report that pub gardens will be allowed to open from 22nd June. This has apparently been leaked in advance to give an additional day of planning for breweries.
This is no way to manage an economy and certainly no way to manage an epidemic.
Contrast all these countries with New Zealand that has declared its epidemic over. There is not a single active case of Covid-19 in the country, and there have been no new cases for 17 days. They are moving to their lowest level of alert today, following their strictly adhered to plan.
That is definitely the way to manage an epidemic.
