Daily Newsletter Wednesday 27th May 2020
Editorial:
Well I am delighted to say that I was wrong. The jump in the National deaths figure for Monday was significantly less than expected! Perhaps we have indeed turned a corner. New cases were up slightly at 2,004 but well within the range expected after a bank holiday weekend.
In Northamptonshire, data was also good. We have returned to previous levels of daily cases and this bodes well for the next two weeks.
However, the problem has not gone away. There is currently a serious spike in cases in Barrow-in-Furness and in South Somerset. The Western General Hospital in Somerset has implemented a robust testing regime, and 40% of staff showing no symptoms have tested positive. The hosptial is now closing to all new admissions including A&E. The spike here is blamed on an increase in furloughed tourists coming to the area during the May good weather.
This emphasises the importance of rapid and universal testing in care settings, to minimise retransmission.
