Daily Newsletter Thursday 14th May 2020

Editorial:

The Government again attempted to clarify its lock down rules yesterday. The original announcements sent out completely mixed messages, and frankly the clarifications were as bad.

An international group of scientists wrote to the Times yesterday. They are advocating the mandatory wearing of masks in all enclosed spaces, and in public open spaces where appropriate social distancing is not possible. They are part of the Masks for all group. Their arguments are simple and strong and I have reproduced two of their charts below.

Unlike the Government's messages, this message is very simple:

Spreading Covid-19 is not right!
If we all wear masks all of the time, then we all protect each other.

Mine are arriving today.

Masks for all:

Why masks for all, saves lives and jobs.

Birthdays:

None that we know of.

Nationally:

494 deaths were reported by the Government yesterday taking us to 33,186 across the UK. The number of new lab confirmed cases was still over 3,200. There was indeed a jump on Tuesday as expected.

Locally:

In Northamptonshire another 14 cases were reported yesterday with the specimen dates being spread back over the last few days.

2 new infections were reported in East Northamptonshire yesterday. But notice the big jump in Bedford!

Local Authority Cases per 100,000 population Daily increase
Bedford 531 309.4 31
Kettering 188 185.6 7
Northampton 392 174.1 0
East Northamptonshire 156 166.1 2
Wellingborough 120 151.0 2
Corby 102 144.0 4
